神經: 신이 다니는 길, 그 길 위의 목소리들
여기 13명의 목소리가 있습니다. 고백처럼 나지막하지만 아우성치듯 힘 있는 목소리입니다. 이들은 한국 실험미술의 거장 이건용 작가의 후원을 받아 국민일보가 제정한 <제2회 국민일보 아르브뤼미술상>을 수상한 신진들입니다. 신진이라지만 최연소 20세 청년부터 69세 할머니까지 연령대는 폭이 넓습니다. 우리는 이들을 ‘발달장애’ 대신에 ‘신경다양성’ 작가라고 부르고자 합니다. 이들이 가진 행동적·심리적·신경적 특성을 ‘장애’가 아닌 ‘차이’의 하나로 바라보자고 여러분에게 제안하고 싶기 때문입니다.
이들은 사람들을 만나서 말을 사용해 소통하는 것이 쉽지 않은 뇌신경적인 특성이 있습니다. 그러므로 선과 색으로 그려진 그림이야말로 이들이 진짜 내고픈 목소리가 아닐까요? 꾹꾹 담아온 생각과 마음을 밖으로 토해낸 고백과 같다고 생각합니다.
이들의 미술 세계는 좀 낯설어 보입니다. 하지만 익숙하지 않기에 오히려 새로움이 주는 기쁨이 있습니다. 새롭다는 것은 미술에서 중요합니다. 이들이 가진 특성이 그런 귀한 자질의 원천입니다.
그래서 이렇게 묻게 됩니다. 신경다양성의 ‘신경(神經)’은 한자 뜻 그대로 ‘신이 다니는 길(신을 뜻하는 신, 경로를 뜻하는 경)이 아닐까 하고요. 신경다양성의 세계는 비장애중심주의, 인간중심주의에 젖어 살아온 사람들이 한 번도 발을 디뎌보지 못한 길, 즉 신이 다니는 길이 맞습니다.
그럼에도 이들의 미술 세계는 정통 미술사와 맥을 같이합니다. 윤곽선을 강조하는 구상 회화에서부터 색이 주는 기쁨을 노래하는 색면 회화, 그리고 내적 감정을 표출하고 형태의 질서를 추출하는 추상 회화까지 스펙트럼이 넓어 놀라울 정도입니다. ‘신이 다니는 길, 그 길 위의 목소리들’을 만나보세요.

Nerve - the Divine Road: The Path of Road, Vocies on the Road
Here are 13 voices, resonating as quietly as confessions yet wielding the power of a roar. They’ve claimed victory in <The 2nd Kukmin Ilbo Art Awards>, a prestigious awards founded by Kukmin Ilbo with support from Lee Kun-yong, a master of experimental art. While often labeled as budding, their ages span from the youngest at 20 to the mature age of 69. Instead of referring to them as having developmental disabilities, I propose recognizing them as neurodiversity artists. This reframing encourages us to view their behavioral, psychological, and neurological characteristics not as disabilities but as unique differences.
These artists possess cranial nerve traits that make conventional communication challenging. Could it be that the images painted with lines and colors serve as the authentic voices they long to express? It feels akin to a confession, laying bare the thoughts and emotions poured into their art.
Their art world appears somewhat peculiar. Yet, the unfamiliarity brings us a joy derived from novelty—an essential aspect in art. The uniqueness of their characteristics serves as the wellspring of these precious qualities.
This prompts my question. In the realm of neurodiversity, the term “Nerve(神經)” literally translates to “the path that God takes.” It signifies a path untouched by those steeped in non-disability-centeredness and anthropocentrism, essentially the divine route.
Despite this, their art world aligns with traditional art history. Remarkably, they boast a diverse array of paintings, ranging from figurative paintings emphasizing contours to color-field paintings that sing the joy of color, and abstract artworks expressing inner emotions e while constructing forms.
